The mound at Comerica Park will once again feature Justin Verlander, as the Detroit Tigers announced on Tuesday, February 10 — during the opening week of 2026 MLB Spring Training — the return of the veteran right-hander to the Motor City.
With just a month and a half remaining before the start of the 2026 MLB season, Verlander was still a free agent. He ultimately signed a one-year, $13 million contract with the team where he began his career and starred for 13 seasons.
At 42 years old, Verlander will further strengthen Detroit’s pitching rotation for the 2026 season, which already includes standout arms such as Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize, and newly acquired Framber Valdez.
Verlander himself celebrated his return to Detroit on social media, sharing a video featuring clips from his first stint with the Tigers and writing: “Back to where it all began.”
During his first tenure in Detroit, Verlander was part of a star-studded rotation that led the team to the 2012 World Series, alongside pitchers such as Max Scherzer, who remains active, and retired right-handers Aníbal Sánchez and Rick Porcello.
