(ENGLISH VERSION BELOW)
Mary Sheffield wins the election and will become the first female mayor of Detroit
For the very first time in history, the city of Detroit, Michigan, will have a female mayor, after Mary Sheffield won a decisive victory in the elections held on Tuesday, November 4, 2025.
After 100% of precincts were counted, Mary Sheffield, the current president of the Detroit City Council, secured her win with 77.02% of the vote (88,229), compared to 22.46% (25,725) for Solomon Kinloch Jr.
Sheffield’s victory came in an election with low turnout, as only 22% of the 519,270 registered voters participated in Detroit’s 2025 general election, totaling 115,518 voters.
In the primaries held on August 5, Mary Sheffield had already demonstrated her lead by capturing 50.82% of the vote, while Solomon Kinloch Jr. received just 17.37%, foreshadowing the outcome of the general election three months later.
Mary Sheffield will make history as the first woman to hold the office of mayor of Detroit. She will also succeed Mike Duggan, who had served as mayor since January 1, 2014, and chose not to run for reelection in order to pursue the governorship of Michigan.
Through social media, Detroit’s outgoing mayor congratulated Sheffield on her decisive victory. “Congratulations to mayor-elect Mary Sheffield! She ran an outstanding campaign and will do a great job running the city of Detroit. Our city’s progress is in very good hands and I know she and her team will make sure it not only continues, but expands”, wrote Mike Duggan.
