Child dies after being struck by ice cream truck in Detroit

A tragic accident occurred on the afternoon-evening of Monday, April 14, when a child between 4 and 6 years old was killed after being struck by an ice cream truck in the west side of Detroit, near the border with Dearborn.

The accident happened shortly after 7:00 p.m. at Rutland St and Diversey Ave, three blocks from the Southfield Freeway. The child, identified as Mubarak Wali, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“This time of year with the weather breaking, it’s very important that everybody’s mindful that the children are out and they’re playing. If you see school buses and ice cream trucks, just slow down a little bit, look around, check your surroundings before proceeding past them. It’s a very tragic scene.

“We made sure that we brought plenty of resources including our chaplain squad to make sure they’re here to support the officers as well as the family. We’re just here to pray for the family right now”, Captain Shannon Hampton of the Detroit Police Department told the media.

According to reports, the child was trying to cross the street on his bicycle when he was struck by the ice cream truck. Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities before being taken into custody.

The driver was released on Tuesday morning while investigations into the accident continue, according to local media reports.
