On September 7th Comerica Bank names Honey Bee La Colmena Market as the “Feet on the Street” winner for the Southeast Michigan market.

Comerica will host a celebratory recognition event and luncheon for Honey Bee Market, and its story will be featured on Comerica’s social channels.

Honey Bee La Colmena Market is a unique full-service market that serves the multicultural neighborhood of Southwest Detroit. The market outlasted the pandemic and is operated by husband-and-wife duo Tammy Alfaro-Koehler and Ken Koehler.

The “Feet on the Street” contest was held during Small Business Week, April 30-May 6, 2023, to recognize small businesses making a difference and impact in their communities.

Comerica Small Business team members visited their customers to say hello and thank them for being a valued customer. Small Business team members then submitted their customer’s details and a photo to enter them into the “Feet on the Street” contest. More than 500 company stories were submitted in one week!

The most unique small business story submission in each market was then selected as the market winner by a Comerica executive panel. The markets include North Texas/Arizona/Florida, Central/South Texas, California, Southeast Michigan and West Central Michigan.

Honey Bee Market was founded in 1956 by Tammy’s grandparents. Tammy grew up working at the family business. Tammy met her husband while working at the family business. In 1996 Ken & Tammy purchased the business from her mother. Honey Bee Market is a third generation neighborhood grocer serving Detroit for more than 65 years.

It’s a full-service market that specializes in fresh produce, fresh cut meat counter, groceries and house prepared foods along with daily specials. They have a large selection of Hispanic ingredients and products.
