While a group of children was attending a back-to-school Mass at Annunciation Catholic School, an armed man opened fire with a rifle through the church windows, killing two minors and injuring 17 others, including 14 children.

The attack claimed the lives of two children, aged 8 and 10, while the perpetrator, a man in his early 20s, shot himself in the rear of the church before police could intervene.

“This was a deliberate act of violence against innocent children and other people worshipping. The sheer cruelty and cowardice of firing into a church full of children is absolutely incomprehensible”, said the Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara.

Jacob Frey, mayor of Minneapolis, expressed his sorrow on social media over what happened at the school, stating that there are no words to describe the horror and tragedy of such a heinous act, while urging the city to surround the affected families with love and support.

“There are no words that can capture the horror and tragedy of the unspeakable act of evil at Annunciation Catholic Church. Children have been killed, more are injured, our community is shaken. Right now, our entire city needs to wrap these families in love and support.

“We are a Minneapolis family. Don’t think about these children just as someone else’s kids. Think of them as your own. This was their first week of school. They should be laughing and goofing off in the hallways right now. They should be learning and playing with their friends”, wrote Mayor Frey on his X account.
